Year 7 – 10 Digital and Design Technologies Integration Teachmeet

18 May, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Years 7 – 10 Teachers are invited to attend our Teachmeet at Varsity College Secondary Campus on Tuesday 18th May from 4 to 6pm.

The Teachmeet theme is Years 7 – 10 Digital Technologies and Design Technologies Integration.

We will start with two stories of successful integration at Varsity College and Saint Andrew’s Lutheran College, before inviting other attendees to share their stories and discussion between participants.

Please see the attached flyer and location details for more information. We look forward to a lively afternoon of networking and discussion.

Topic 1: A Gaming console project that combines Design and Digital Technologies

Presenters: Benjamin Hyde and Steven Tucker

Description: We have been tasked with creating a project for students that are part of an advanced group. They are to use skills from both Design and Technology and Digital Technologies.

As part of a previous project, a gaming console was built, running student developed software.

Learning from that experience, we are developing a course where students design and build a console, then code the game that the console will run.

The project combines laser cutting technology to manufacture the console along with a Raspberry Pi on which the student developed software will run.

The talk will give a walk-through of the software used to design the console for laser cutting, as well as discussing the software options and coding component.

Topic 2: Cross curricular teaching experience

Presenters: George Maliwat, Greg Dart and James Polentas

At St Andrews Lutheran College, Gold Coast, Queensland we run a program, wherein teachers ‘Team Teach’ while integrating the curriculum across two learning areas: Design Technology and Digital Technologies. The students use various software programs to design, build and program their images using the Arduino software to produce a theatre box. The integrated teaching and learning enable the students and teachers to acquire skills across the different subject areas. We would like to showcase and share our experience with fellow teachers.
