A classroom approach to preventing online child sexual exploitation

This presentation details how resources developed by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) ThinkUKnow program are developed in response to current and emerging trends identified through public reports to the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE). Real case studies and current research is used to design and deliver age-appropriate prevention and response messaging to children and young people in a classroom setting. All educational resources have been aligned with the updated Australian Curriculum 9.0 and were written under the guidance of leading professionals from law enforcement, childhood development and education backgrounds and will be discussed within the presentation.

Bio: Rachel Purdy is a Senior Prevention Officer within the Australian Federal Police’s Online Child Safety team. With a background in early childhood and primary education, she works alongside other subject matter experts to develop education materials for children, parents, carers and teachers with the aim to prevent online child sexual exploitation.

Digital Solutions Web Context IA2 and IA3 Using PHP

Digital Solutions IA2 and IA3 can be completed in a number of ways using a variety of programming languages. This workshop will go through the skills students and teachers need to do IA2 and IA3 in the web applications context using PHP and MySQL. Participants will explore how PHP and MySQL work and then code a web based component of a digital solution in PHP to talk to a MySQL database, and another web based component that talks to a live online API returning JSON and XML data to programmatically transform the data into something presentable. We will also explore the IA2 and IA3 tasks themselves and unpack the complexity (actually simplicity) required in the digital solution for students to have enough to get full marks and view some student samples. No experience in PHP is necessary but an understanding of programming control structures (sequence, selection, iteration, functions, variables) and basic SQL and database construction would be advantageous. Participants will leave the session with two coded components that can be adapted into much larger digital solutions.

Participant Requirement: Laptop (no software required).

Introduction to Python Turtle

Learn the basics of coding with Python!

All software – including games, apps, websites, and more – is essentially designed to follow instructions. We refer to these instructions as coding, and the order and rules that they follow as algorithms.

This webinar will explore these important concepts through Python Turtle. The Turtle library allows you to issue commands to a “turtle” and have the turtle follow them as if it were a pen drawing on paper. You can use it to draw various shapes, fill them in, change their colors, and more – all through easy-to-use programming commands. You’ll also learn how to structure these commands as an algorithm to create a digital picture of a solar system.
