QSITE Board member
Student Web Challenge & Leadership Awards Representative
Kym Coleman understands the fundamental value of her 15 years with QSITE and believes in the value of ICTs in education.
“I do not see ICTs in education confined to specialist teachers. I support all staff using ICTs as an exciting and dynamic addition to engage students in their learning,” Kym said.
Kym currently works as Head of Technology (Years 9 – 12), at Ipswich Girls' Grammar School, after 10 years as Head of Information Technology for Lourdes Hill College.
Kym has also served as an IPT/ITS District Review Panel Member across Brisbane from 1991 to the present.
In 2007 Kym joined the QSITE board but has been actively coordinating the student-focussed ICT for Girls Projects and Student Web Challenge since 2004.
“Students live in a society well-integrated with technology, it is important to run programs that encourage ICTs in all facets of education,” Kym said.
“With ICT integration, teachers deliver lessons that are more exciting and ideally paced for Y generation students.
“But this doesn’t happen when we install technology into a classroom. Teachers need ongoing training and support.
“When I have a problem to solve for my classes, my staff, or on behalf of my school, QSITE connections provide the answers for me, and quickly. You cannot get this sort of support any other way.
“Fundamentally I see QSITE as my professional association. I value the support I receive when I need it and the real-world relevance the network brings to my classroom.
“I am also confident and comfortable that QSITE remains abreast of policy and curriculum development and actively contributes to these processes and documents.
“Without this input from QSITE we would have an IT curriculum in Queensland with no real relevance to our students and what is happening in their world.
“It is so important for me to have this link to education professionals around Queensland, at all levels. These links help me have a say in my professional future. You cannot get that support any other way either.”
