The following day and half day workshops will be available on Wednesday September 30 at Churchie.

1. Scratch Introduction (full day)

Scratch is an online programming and presentation tool that is enabling learners to realise essential 21st century skills. Developed by MIT, it promotes creativity, reasoning, collaboration and computation. Best of all it is a free application available online and supported by a thriving online community. The workshop will introduce participants to the Scratch website, interface and environment through the production of a digital learning object.

2. Digital Storytelling (full day)

If we start with the traditional art of storytelling then mix in new and emerging technologies, stories go digital! By combining the many elements: text, image, sound, voice into a story, digital storytelling is given its power, with each element playing a unique role.

During the workshop participants will create a digital story combining the many elements by exploring the various software available such as photostory, audacity, Web 2.0 tools and other emerging technologies such as mp3players and webcams.

3. Creating an Online Database in MySQL and a PHP Web Interface"?  (full day)

This full day workshop will lead participants through the process of creating an online database in MySQL using PHPMyAdmin, and developing an interactive web interface using PHP. The easy to use webserver built into IPT Online (www.ipto.com.au) will be used. The skills you learn in this workshop would be very useful for implementing a minor or major project in IPT or ITS, and resources such as sample projects will be shared during the workshop. The new IPT syllabus is tipped to make online databases a compulsory part of the course - be prepared! Bring a USB stick to save your
PHP files.

4. Go Mobile with Game Design (full day)

In this full day preconference workshop, participants will discover how Adobe Flash and Device Central can be used to create digital content for mobile devices. Participants will use Flash to create their first game targeted for a mobile device and will receive access to a resource kit which they can use with their students. This hands-on workshop will be facilitated by Kristine Kopelke, an Adobe Education Leader in the Pacific Region.

5. Teaching Algorithmic Programming in IPT Using Web-based Programming Languages (half day)

This workshop will showcase an approach entitled Event-Based Programming using Top-Down Design and Stepwise Refinement. The work is based on the textbook: Simple Program Design (Robertson). Algorithmic programming concepts are drawn out into programming examples using HTML/CSS and Javascript.
Software such as Dreamweaver (and/or open source/free software as available), Inspiration (or free alternative, Dia) and Firefox 3.5 (with Web Developers Toolbar).
Top-Down Design is achieved through building Structure Design Charts as a representation of a planned interface. Step-wise refinement is achieved using Pseudocode.
Sample projects will be built during the workshop.

6. Moodle from Start to Students (full day)
This workshop will lead participants through the installation processes for setting up your own moodle (www.moodle.org) site for your school. It will then explore the ways that this learning management system can be used to support student and teacher learning. The workshop is targeted to both educational and technical people alike and will be tailored to meet the needs of the participants and will be hands on. It will be lead by Thomas Purnell and Amanda Rablin from Brisbane Catholic Education
