Queensland University of Technology:

"What's happening with IT in the Senior Phase of Learning?"

Extract... Each state and territory in Australia offers specialist IT studies in the senior secondary curriculum. Since the start of the millenium, however, numbers in these subjects have been falling and the gender disparity has been increasing.

This presentation will outline student participation in these subjects in Queensland as well as in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Consideration will also be given to the experiences of Year 10 students as recorded in MCEETYA's (2007) reporting on the national ICT Literacy Testing and being investigated in a current major research study.

Given the national importance of IT in the context of the digital education revolution, the circumstance of falling numbers in these subjects is of major concern. Redressing this free fall should be a goal of educational systems across Australia and a major consideration in the framing of new (state or national) curriculum offerings in IT.
